I don't believe the house shown in the movie is real. I think the house that is shown in the actual film is just a Hollywood set. But of course, I could be mistaken.
However, Stephen King got the idea for the house from the real-life Winchester Mansion. The mansion was built by the wife of the man who invented the Winchester rifle, William Wirt Winchester. He died, and his widow, Sarah Winchester, believed that all the ghosts of the people who were killed by the Winchester rifle were haunting her, and that they would not stop haunting her unless she built a great big mansion for them.
According to Sarah, the ghosts gave her instructions on how to build the mansion, which resulted in some very kooky building plans. For example, there are staircases that lead nowhere, doors that open into walls, a cupboard that is only half an inch deep and therefore useless, and all sorts of crazy stuff. I have included some links to sites about the Winchester Mansion.
