The story was inspired by several things. One was the death of J. M. Barrie's older brother David at the age of 12: his mother took comfort in the fact that David would be a little boy forever. When Barrie was in his 30s, he met the Llewelyn Davies boys, five brothers whom he based Peter Pan and the Lost Boys on. Barrie was also a fan of the book "Treasure Island", which is where he got the pirates.
