It first started as "British North America", under the rule of Britian, it was made up of "colonies", such as British Columbia. However, on 1867, Canada East, Canada West, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick decided to join together to form the "Dominion of Canada". The best term used now is "Confederation", which means the joining of several colonies to create a single nation with a central government.
Canada became part of the British Commonwealth in 1867. The English fought with the French for ownership - guess who won. However, Quebec is predominately French and still feel animosity towards anyone that speaks English. The French have been a thorn in this whole country's side. Canada produced a red and white maple leaf Flag on the anniversary of 100 years in 1967. Since then, Canada has not been part of the British Commonwealth, but we do still carry the figure head of the Queen on some of our money - out of respect.
