It's only cold in winter. The interior of South Africa is a plateau which is high above sea level. The hight is what makes it cold in winter and mild in summer. The Cape is on sea level but it is hit by a lot of cold fronts in winter.
It depends where you are in Africa. If you are North of the Equator winter is December, January, and February. If you are South of the Equator your winter is June, July, and August.
The Winter Olympics have never been held in Africa.

The Northern Hemisphere has winter during November-January, whilst the Southern Hemisphere has winter during the Northern Hemipshere's summer. Some parts of Africa are in the Northern Hemisphere whilst other parts are South of the Equator. So some parts of Africa will have winter at the same time as the US whilst the Southern Part (Kenya, South Africa etc.) will have their summer when its the US's winter!

Africa is such a huge continent that is a nebulous gquestion. In Capetown it can be almost freezing in July, but in Kenya you will be sweating, even in their winter.
