Ontario was created as one of Canada's original four provinces on July 1, 1867.
Ontario has been a part of Canda all along, at least ever since the term "Canada" was used to denote that part of the world. Its first legal name was "Upper Canada" when it was made a colony in 1791, afer it had grown, largely by absorption of the "Loyalists", who left the United States after the American Revolution. In 1841, Britain united the two colonies of Upper and Lower Canada into the united province of Canada, which was still a colony. At the time of Canadian Confederation, the legal name of "Ontario" was first used, after the Great Lake, to avoid confusion with the country name. Lower Canada was renamed "Quebec" at the same time. Ontario expanded three times since, in 1874, 1889 and 1912.
Ontario became a province in 1867 when it became one of the founding provinces of the Dominion of Canada. It had previously been known as Upper Canada after being separated from the British province of Quebec by the Constitutional Act of 1791.
===========================
Originally part of Québec, a province of New France, present-day Ontario continued being part of Québec after the British Conquest. The Treaty of Paris (1783) reduced the size of Québec considerably, to the point that the boundary is virtually the same as today's International Boundary between the US and Canada to the head of the lakes.
The Constitutional Act of 1791 created on December 26, 1791, two new British colonies: Lower Canada and Upper Canada. The dividing line was, for the most part, the Ottawa River. Upper Canada was the colony to the west.
By the Act of Union, 1840, the colonies were united, effective February 11, 1841, and became known as the (pre-Confederation) Province of Canada. The British North America Act (now the Constitution Act) created Canada on July 1, 1867. Sections 5 and 6 created the Provinces of Ontario and Québec , which had the same boundaries as the colonies of Upper and Lower Canada. Therefore, Ontario became a province on July 1, 1867, the date of Confederation.
Please note: the word "dominion" has never been part of Canada's name. Canada's name has always been Canada-nothing more and nothing less. See section 3: "one dominion under the name of Canada." The word "dominion" was merely a term of description.
Toronto was the capital of Upper Canada before it was united with Lower Canada to become the pre-Confederation Province of Canada. The capital of this united province alternated among Toronto, Kingston, Montréal and Quebec City several times before Ottawa was chosen as the permanent capital in 1857. It only saw one session of parliament (in 1866-1867) before the Province of Canada joined confederation and was split into Ontario and Quebec. The capital of Canada (the country) has been Ottawa ever since.
Queen Victoria chose Ottawa as the capital of the province of Canada on 1857 December 31. However, the infrastructure such as parliament buildings had to be built first, so Ottawa did not officially become the capital until 1866.
When Canada became a country as the Dominion of Canada on 1867 July 1, Ottawa remained its capital.
