They never personally did, but instead sent in musical clips, pre-curser to music video's, to the show. Song's like "rain", "Hello Goodbye", and famously, "strawberry Feilds Forever/Penny Lane", in which it was the first time the "kids" saw The Beatles with beards and mustaches. Some commented they looked like grampas'. Intresting note: in 1963 Dick Clark and Swan records had the opportunity to release the Beatles in the US under their label, but Dick took one look at them and said they'll never fly. The rate a record segment on American Bandstand had "she loves you" and it scored poorly.
The program that eventually became American Bandstand debuted in Philadelphia in 1952, hosted by Bob Horn. Dick Clark took over the show as host in 1956, and he believed the show belonged on a national network, rather than just remaining a local hit. Rock and roll was sweeping the country, and Clark was in the right place at the right time: he was able to persuade the ABC Network to launch the show nationally, and in August 1957, American Bandstand made its debut to audiences of teens all across the country.
