The script for the play Mamma Mia! does not identify a year. However it does say that daughter Sophie is 20, conceived during "Our Last Summer", which was "the time of the flower power". This seems to suggest that Sophie was born in the late 60s. In the film version there are also (unconvincing) flashbacks to the guys wearing hippie fashions. It also appears that Donna and her friends performed as the Dynamos during the disco era, the late 70s, when Sophie was a kid. All this adds up to the main story being set around the late 80s, probably no later than 1990.
