Traditional woods for paddles (the Ojibwe word is abwi, plural abwiin) were ash or maple. Bird's eye maple makes a very attractive finished product. Interestingly, a woman's paddle was of a specific style, 4 feet 10 inches long with a blade 22 inches long and 4.25 inches wide; men's paddles were of a slightly different shape, longer and heavier.

The main frame of Ojibwe snowshoes was made of ash or birch wood, steamed to enable it to be bent into shape. These staves were then attached at front and back with wooden pegs and rawhide binding. Crosspieces were also of birch. The netting was of babiche (rawhide cut into long, thin pieces like cord), laced through holes in the frame.
