Africa is as large as North and South America combined. African people are more diverse than any other people on earth. Even tho they are both black, the people of Kenya are genetically more similar to Caucasians than they are to the people of Nigeria. It is impossible to make generalizations, but here goes.
The Sarah Desert was a fertile plain. It had a high level of culture. We see the rock drawings that were left behind. The culture of the Sahara would vanish when the desert took over that area. There would also be a culture in the deserts of South Africa. It would vanish without a trace.
We do not know about other parts of Africa. We know where roads and farms were abandoned as the Europeans brought slaves to the Americas. While archaeological techniques can sometimes take us back to 5000 bce, it helps if we are able to find a a particular location with artifacts. Until we can find artifacts that old in other parts of Africa, we will have no idea how the people lived.
