The Twilight Zone franchise, including all three television series, both films, and printed media, is presented in an anthology format which features a variety of screenwriters rather than a single screenwriter.

For the original The Twilight Zone series, creator Rod Serling acted as the primary screenwriter, writing 92 of the series' 156 episodes. Aside from Serling, the major screenwriters for the show were Charles Beaumont (19 scripts), Richard Matheson (14 scripts), Earl Hamner, Jr. (8 scripts), George Clayton Johnson (4 scripts), Montgomery Pittman (3 scripts), Martin M. Goldsmith (2 scripts), Jerry Sohl (2 scripts). Other screenwriters that contributed a single screenplay to the original series are Ambrose

Bierce, Ray Bradbury, Richard DeRoy, John Furia, Jr., Robert Presnell, Jr., E. Jack Neuman, William Idelson, Jerry McNeely, OCee Ritch, Reginald Rose, Bernard C. Schoenfeld, A. T. Strassfield, John Tomerlin, Anthony Wilson.

Twilight Zone: The Movie had only three screenwriters, with director John Landis writing the introduction and first segment and Richard Matheson supplying the scripts for the remaining three segments, but sharing credit for "Kick the Can" with Melissa Mathison.

The 1985 revival of The Twilight Zone had a multitude of writers with few regulars. Exceptions include Alan Brennert, Michael Cassutt, Paul Chitlik, Philip DeGuere, Jeremy Bertrand Finch, Harlan Ellison, George R. R. Martin, Rockne S. O'Bannon and J. Michael Straczynski. The new series also made use of scripts from screenwriters from the original series, including those of Ray Bradbury, George Clayton Johnson, Richard Matheson, and Rod Serling.

Rod Serling's Lost Classics was based off of two undeveloped plots written by Rod Serling, with the first segment ("The Theatre") expanded and adapted by screenwriter Richard Matheson.

Finally, the third The Twilight Zone series, much like the second series, rarely featured the same writers. Names that did appear more than once in the show's sole season included Ira Steven Behr, Jill Blotevogel, James Crocker, Brent V. Friedman, Christopher Mack, Kamran Pasha, and Frederick Rappaport. The series also featured two scripts written by Rod Serling (although reworked in the one case) and a rare screenwriting credit from E.R.'s Eriq La Salle for the episode "Memphis".
