No. Records show that the SOS call was used at least as early as 10 June 1909, by the Cunard liner SS Slavonia.

Originally, the wireless signal for a ship in distress was cqd, but in 1908 a new signal, SOS, was introduced since the combination of three dots, three dashes, and three dots could be easily recognized by even the greenest amateur.

RMS Titanic issued an official SOS mayday alert shortly after midnight on April 15 1912, when it became obvious that the ship was filling with water too fast to be contained, after striking an iceberg.

Yes. at the time there were two totally different Distress Call signals in Morse Code:

  1. The then standard CQD.
  2. The newly introduced SOS, that many telegraph operators were not yet aware of.

The Titanic's radio telegraph operator sent both signals, alternating occasioning. This actually caused some confusion on the ships receiving his transmissions, especially when their radio telegraph operator was unfamiliar with the new SOS signal.

No. Although the Titanic was one of the first to use it, it was not THE first. The SS Arapahoe was the first ship to use the SOS signal, on August 11, 1909.

Titanic was not the first vessel to send out an SOS. That was most likely the Minnehaha in 1910.

Titanic, however, was the first vessel to send out an SOS and then definitively sink.

The "telegraphists" on Titanic first sent out a CQD as a call for help and then sent out the newer SOS.
