As my dad fondly remembers (He lived from l9l7-75) Bugs Bunny mertis this honor as he was and always has been a Warner Brothers character. Warner introduced sound i films (the film the Jazz Singer), Newsreels- a logical fission-product with much news in the late twenties, Baseball, Lindbergh flight, etc< and finally while the projectors were rewinding, what better short subjects than, -steel guitar BlooooooM! Mkerrioly we roll along!- Bugs Bunny. the earliest sound movie cartoon. The earliest Mickey Mouse originally called Steamboat Willie- did not roll off the lines until the following year. all in l927- Sound films, newsreels (Warner-Pathe) and Bugs Bunny. That's a well-recalled fact! of course there were older newspaper comic strips but you asked abourt movie Cartoons, it"s B ugs.

Arguably the fist animate cartoon may be found in such prehistoric cave paintings where animals are painted with multiple sets of legs to portray animals in motion. There is an Egyptian mural which is approximately 4000 years old that depicts wrestlers in action. It is not animation per se but does show the artists intent to show people in motion. The zoetrope was developed in China around 180 AD by inventor Ting Huan and is a mechanism that gives an appearance of pictures moving. In 1834 George Horner developed a modern day version of the zoetrope which is considered to be the forerunner of modern day animation. In 1868 John Barns Linnet created the first flip book which was a set of sequential drawings that when the pages were flipped in a rapid motion created the appearance of motion.

It was in the 1890's when film animation first began. The very first animated film was created by Charles Emile-Reynaud in 1892. This was done by using a system of looping pictures of which Reynaud used twelve pictures. On standard film the first cartoon was done by J Stuart Blackton in 1906 in the seminal work "Humorous phases of funny faces" which showed a cartoonist drawing faces on a chalkboard and the faces come to life.
