In 1868 John Barns Linnet created the first flip book which was a set of sequential drawings that when the pages were flipped in a rapid motion created the appearance of motion.
It was in the 1890's when film animation first began. The very first animated film was created by Charles Emile-Reynaud in 1892. This was done by using a system of looping pictures of which Reynaud used twelve pictures. On standard film the first cartoon was done by J Stuart Blackton in 1906 in the seminal work "Humorous phases of funny faces" which showed a cartoonist drawing faces on a chalkboard and the faces come to life.
