That's a matter of opinion. Some would consider it True Grit because he finally won an Oscar, but Sands of Iwo Jima he was nominated and it is a classic. But then so is "The Quiet Man", "McClintock", "The Shootist", "Big Jake", and those are just a few.

The Searchers is the best movie the Duke ever made.

Wayne's career spanned five decades with over 200 films to his credit. It is virtually impossible to pick just one as most successful. Many were financially successful, many were critically acclaimed, some were Wayne's favorites for specific reasons and were considered a sucess to him. True Grit was important to Wayne for many reasons. His only film to win him a best actor Oscar was also a huge financial success also. 1939's Long Trail was Wayne's first film for a big studio with a big director (John Ford), and was Wayne's graduation from B serial westerns to legitiment films. The Alamo was a personal tribute and an important film for Wayne which almost bankrupted Wayne's personal fortune.
