Dred Scott was a runaway slave who fled to the free state of Illinois. He moved back to a slave state and sued for his freedom on the basis that he was now free after escaping slavery. He lost the case because slaves were seen as property, which the federal government was not allowed to infringe upon according to the constitution.

Chiefly the legality of slavery. The Court ruled that slavery was legal in every state of the Union, according to their reading of the Constitution. This meant that the Missouri Compromise had been invalid all along - an astonishing new claim.

The Court also declared that a black man should not be suing a white man - infuriating the Abolitionists, and heightening the tension between the two sections.
