This question was *sort-of* answered in the movie "Muppets From Space".
Gonzo is officially an alien...but that still doesn't go towards explaining *what type* of alien, or what species, etc.
He thought he was just a "weirdo" until his family returned for him in that film. "Unlike most of the central Muppets characters, Gonzo is not a puppet version of a human or a recognizable animal. He is a muppet who sports a bizarre, non-human appearance, which includes blue fur, purple feathers on his head, bug-eyes, and a long, hooked nose." ~ Wikipedia
Prior to that, most people took him for some sort of bird with references to "buzzard beak", "turkey nose", etc. being the most common...which may still have possibilities, oddly enough! We never found out what *species* gonzo and his family are, so it's entirely possible that they could be an Avian race from outer space :D
The similarities to *some kind* of bird are definitely unmistakable, to say the least...but of course, in the end, he's just foam and rubber and etc(and yet, so much more than that too, lol).
He was described as a "whatever". However, in the film, Muppets in Space, it was revealed that Gonzo is an alien, but it was never mentioned what type of alien he was.
In The Muppet Show and the movies that followed, Gonzo has referred to himself as a Weirdo.
