Settling the frontier was definitely not for the fainthearted. Unsettled areas still had wildlife and native american peoples who had lived there for generations. Later homesteaders were likely to come into conflict with open range cattle or sheep herders who saw the land and the water as theirs even though they did not own it. Killing and sabotage of homesteaders was a common event. Just as we find when we do a DIY project at home, there is always some other tool or material you need. However, in the early homesteading days, people had to be resourceful in repurposing what they had or create the object themselves. Prairies and other lands did not have trees, so people built homes out of sod. Greased paper served as windows. In the southwest, people made bricks of clay that were tempered with straw and gravel. In the late 1800s, as society increased, brickyards, stores, blacksmiths and others came into areas. As the railroads came, then the kits to build houses as well as other building materials came by rail.
