The area is in what is now called the "four corners". It is mostly between 4,500 and 8,000 feet. There are higher mountians up to 10,000 feet or more. There area is mostly pinon pine and juniper forest and steppe land with spruce and lodgepole and fir at higher elevations. The soils are shallow and the underrlying rock is mostly sandstone and silt stone. The San Juan and Colorado are the largest rivers. There are many mesas and canyons.
