It was claimed by a mixture of European countries, but France had the largest claim.

Well. For all you people doing projects right now. I'm sory. this is all i have . Giovanni Da Verrazano was an Italian explorer, born in 1485. His reason of exploration was because the King of France wanted to claim new land. Giovanni also wanted to find a northwestern sea passage to China and to capture Spanish ships. In he sailed for France and settled in Rhode Island. In 1528, sailing from France, he explored the West Indies, where he was killed by the natives. PLEASE dont use this. its for taking notes ONLY. . He had 4 ships, 2 of them were shipwrecked, but luckily 1 survived and it was sent back carrying prizes such as gold, silver, and spices. He sailed south until he reached Carolina. Verrazano was the first European to enter New York Harbor.
It was called the France Land Aggreement.

The King of France wanted to claim land and he wanted to find a route to China.
Giovanni da Verrazano landed in the area which is now known as North Carolina. He is known as the first European since the Norse to explore the coast of North American along the Atlantic Ocean.
Giovanni da verrazzano claimed North America
His goals were to explore the coast of the "New Land" and to find a passage to the Orient. It was believed that there might be a passage between North and South America, and so he was chosen by King Francis I to sail to this area and discover a new and quicker route to the Orient. He returned to France after several voyages with a claim of the New World for France on July 8, 1524.
Giovanni da Varazzano's exploration was important because he claimed land that was actually New York Bay.
They caused France to claim land
Right from Prehistory through Ancient History, Middle Ages and up til Late Modern Times (but not Contemporary), a rule had been followed - if you find a piece of land that doesn't belong to anybody or belongs to people weaker than you, then you can claim that piece of land for yourself, irrespective of the size of the land. So the Brits and the French and the Italians claimed America and Canada and many other parts of the world. (You are probably thinkinking of Jaques Cartier who claimed Canada for France.) (whatever that means.)
