Zimbabwe is nominally a parliamentary democracy, but in practice resembles a Dictatorship, with long-time president Robert Mugabe using violence and intimidation to maintain his power. After the defeat of the ruling party in parliamentary elections in March 2008, results of the concurrent presidential election were withheld for five weeks. Since then, the government has declared that a run-off election is needed, and efforts to discourage opposition supporters from voting have been taking place. The situation is volatile, with more unrest expected before the run-off election, now schedule for June 27.
If anything, Zimbabwe's government became less caring of their own poor people and favored those who blindly supported Mugabe. His friends became rich and the people of Zimbabwe live in fear and near starvation.
A parliamentary democracy, however the country is effectively an authoritarian dictatorship.
