Some of the themes in The Dark Knight include the battle between good and evil, morality, right vs. wrong. The movie questions whether or not mankind is inherently selfish, evil, etc. Another related theme is how far must a human be pushed before he/she goes over the edge. How sane are we as humans?
These themes can especially be seen played out in the ferry scene where passengers must decide whether or not to blow up the other ferry to save themselves. Aaron Eckhart's character, Two-Face, as a character embodies the question of sanity when he goes over the edge after his accident. He is the knight in shining armor who turned to crime.
The themes in the movie can be read differently by each viewer, though. This is one take on the movie and what it makes the audience think about.
It is actually called Dark Knight- a pun on the Caped Crusader ( here, Batman, though that handle has also been applied to his DC sometimes partner, Superman as both crusade against crime and do wear capes. by the way Capes were worn by Medieval Knights to ward of the heat of North Africa and were worn over the armor. There were different color patterns- an early ancestor of the Arm of Service color codes.
