No. There was a J. Dawson aboard the ship and many people still visit his grave site under the misconception that it was Jack. But the characters were simply made up for the film. However, many of the other passengers mentioned were real people.

No, but the plot line of the story had a historical origin. Historically, there was a blue sapphire pendant on the ship. It was given to Titanic passenger Kate Florence Phillips by her married lover, Samuel Morley, as the pair fled to America to make a new life for themselves. Morley perished in the sinking, and it is believed that this tragic love story was the inspiration for James Cameron's film.

To make a long story short, and hang on to your life vest- the characters in the Titanic film were NOT real people, but fictional characters akin to Colonel Klink and Sergeant Schultz, albeit more serious. In the plot twist- again to make a long story short there is some dangling on wreckage or rigging- Jack Davis ( I believe this is his name, falls to his death, but Rose survives and is rescued. Some Russian ( of all people) critics thought there could have been a plot device so that both lovers survived the Titanic shipwreck tragedy, but this was not the case of the writers.
