"Ride With The Devil" (1999), starring Tobey Maguire, is actually a decent presentation of the atmosphere surrounding the Missouri "bushwhackers" in that deadly Civil War within the Civil War that went on there.

"Glory" (1989) is the story of the 54th Massachusetts, one of the first black Union regiments.

"Gettysburg" (1993) is an adaptation from Jeff Shaara's "The Killer Angels", focusing mostly on Lee and Longstreet, and on Union Colonel (later Major General) Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain at Gettysburg. Faithfully follows written accounts, as far as it goes.

"Gods and Generals" (2003) is another Shaara adaptation, focusing mostly on Stonewall Jackson.

"Cold Mountain" (2003) I have a hard time being neutral about. Its supposedly set where I live, but they filmed it in Romania, and got an Australian to play the (supposedly American southern) female lead. Its a good account though of some aspects of the home front in the south.

"The Hunley" (1999) is a good account of that ill-fated Confederate submarine, the first submarine ever to sink an enemy ship.

"Ironclads" (1991) is about the Monitor vs. the Virginia (it was no longer the Merrimac).

Hollywood seems to prefer special effects and car chases, and gratuitous sex, to actually telling stories these days. And you can't trust them at all to be historically accurate, if to do so would get in the way of a "good story".
