There are a number of types of provincial representatives in Alberta.
The Lieutenant Governor of Alberta represents the Queen in Right of Alberta. She or he summons and prorogues the legislature; provides the Royal Assent to bills passed by the legislature; and ensures that the province always has a premier who has the support of a majority of the legislature's elected members. The Lieutenant Governor is appointed by the Governor General on the advice of the prime minister.
The current Lieutenant Governor is His Honour the Honourable Donald Ethell O.C., O.M.M., A.O.E., M.S.C., C.D.
There are also members of the Legislative Assembly (or MLAs). This refers to elected members of the Alberta legislature, elected from time to time in general elections.
There are also members of the House of Commons(or MPs). This refers to elected members of the House of Commons, federally, responsible for representing electoral districts in the province of Alberta.
There are also six senators, responsible for the representation of regional interests in the Upper House (the Senate). Senators are appointed by the Governor General on the advice of the prime minister.
