At noon on April 14, 1912, the Titanic, the largest passenger steamship in the world,
left Southampton, England, on its way to the New York City, under the command of Captain John Edward Smith.
The tragic story of the Titanic illustrates the danger and pure folly of constructing a huge ship without the necessary safeguards to protect passengers in case of disaster. The builder responsible for design and construction of the mega-ship admitted that the ship was made of iron and would definitely sink if damaged. He also said there were not enough lifeboats on board for more than half the passengers because some of the financiers thought the lifeboats would give the deck a crowded look.
Titanic collided with an iceberg at approximately 11:40 pm and sank at 2:20 pm, resulting in the deaths of 1,517 people in one of the deadliest peacetime sea disasters in history. There were 2,228 people on board.
Lifeboat #7 was lowered first, on the starboard side, with only 28 people on board out of a maximum capacity of 65. The Titanic was built to hold 32 life boats, but carried only 20.
