The first unit is the main filming crew, which works with the lead actors and is directly controlled by the director.

The second unit is typically smaller and films shots which do not involve the lead actors, such as establishing shots, stunt double shots, etc. Basically, all the little shots which don't require the direct involvement of the director. The second unit will have its own director, who reports to the movie's director.
