She has to make the prince marry her or suffer a horrible death. This she has to do while under the handicap of being mute and having chronic pain in her legs. Alternately she can kill the prince and return to being a mermaid by bathing in his blood.

Falling in love with somebody your Father ( King Neptune) doesn"t approve of- and Black Magic to get Human-style landing gear ( legs) Too much occult practice coming off as ( Okay!) in the original story- first she lost her voice- and then died- dissolving into the water to become foam on the sea- This is the normal fate for mermaids ( according to Anderson) and explains a lack of fossils or body parts washing ashore!) but with Ariel the process is hastened by her act of miscegeneation. Crazy at it sounds- it is a parable against race-mixing.

In the Disney movie "The Little Mermaid," the main character is Ariel, a mermaid. Her father is Triton, King of the sea. Ariel is fascinated by the human world and wants nothing more than to experience life "up above," out of the sea. Triton is over-protective of Ariel (his youngest daughter), so he is very harsh and strict with her. This causes strife between them, and Ariel, in her desperation, turns to the evil Ursula for help.

So basically, the main conflict would be about Ariel's relationship with her father. But it's also about Ariel finding herself and taking a stand despite the hardships she's faced with (such as losing her voice). Throughout the entire movie, Ariel never falters from her beliefs.
