Since we read this book this year, I believe the climax is when Alex/Chris dies from eating the roots of a potato. The book that Chris was using for his survival didn't exactly tell all the details of this potato root. It did say that the roots were edible and were not poison, it happened to not mention that the seeds on the roots WERE poison. So poor Chris suffers for many days from the poison. To make this short, Chris eats bad potato-root seeds and dies from a horrid tummy-ache. Hope this helps :).
P.S.-------> This is just an assumption, so if I were you I would check because I'm not that positive of my response. But still, I think I'm on to something if not correct.
