Ponyboy was just an understanding guy that is easy to talk to. He describes Sodapop like that but he doesn't realize he's like his older brother in that way.

Randy also knows that Johnny Cade, Pony's best friend, is dieing so it's gives Randy a sense of security because Bob was Randy's best friend and Randy is hurting and he assumes so is Pony, which is right though Pony has convinced himself Johnny will live.

Cherry had talked to Pony the entire time that they were at the movies and despite their social differences they grew close. Though they don't talk at school, Cherry confides in Ponyboy because he's a great sensitive understanding guy.

Johnny has had a rough life with his parents always fighting but he idolizes Dally. Dally is a touch guy so there is no way Johnny would tell him about these things and the rest wouldn't really understand. Ponyboy is his best friend so it's very easy to confide in him.

Ponyboy learned from Randy about the Socs/Socials that the Socs/Socials aren't all bad. Most of them are because they're trying to act cool.
