A material that can both conduct and insulate, depending on the electric fields put across it. It has to do with electrons and holes. I only got an answer to this in a third year electrical engineering course...

For a good example, check out how a diode works. It conducts when voltage is applied one way and insulates when it's applied another way.

What term is given to the process of rearranging electrons in a semiconducter by adding atoms of other elements?

This procedure is called doping.

What elements are semiconducter?

One element that is semiconducter is Silicon. 2nd answer: One common element used to manufacture a semiconductor is silicon. Germanium has also been widely used, and is more sensitive to tiny voltage changes than silicon. The compound gallium arsenide is very common in the manufacture of semiconductor material, as well.

Robert Hall invented the first semiconducter laser for CD players :)

Why RAM is made up of Semi conductor material?

Ram has 0's and 1's. A zero is no electrons. A 1 has electrons. Thus, the RAM chip must be used with semiconducter material.

What is potential barrier on the basis of p-type and n-type semiconducter?

The potential barrier on the basis of p-type and n-type semiconductor is the space created by the depletion layer that charged particles need sufficient energy to overcome.

What is used in an electrical circuit to prevent a short circuit?

difference between p type and n type semiconducter materialAnswerInsulation is used to prevent a short current. To protect the circuit should a short-circuit fault occur is either a fuse or a circuit breaker.

What is difference between semiconductor and HRC fuse?

semiconductor fuse is used to save the diodes ,thyristers and IGBTS because the below time is very fast in the case of any short circuit and over current, HRC fuse is mostly used in the power factors panels and its below time is less then semiconducter fuses.

What is the element is used as a semiconducter in computers?

Usually silicon now, but germanium has been used in the past. Also some alloys like gallium arsenide have been used for high speed. Much work has been done with carbon to build electronics both in the form of ultrapure diamond and nanotubes. If they can make this work the chips should function up to 600ºC without failure.

What are the advantage of semiconductor over conductor?

semiconductors are the conducors they are partially conduct electricity. And we can increase therir conductivity by using various method . They are Intrinsic method and extrinsic method . Intrinsic method is heating the semiconducter . Extrinsic method is doping. By using this method the conductivity of semiconductors is rapidly increases. Then we use semiconductors are prefferd to conductors
