Wild donkeys are animals who migrate by season. The only wild donkeys that we have in the state of Texas are the burros who spend part of their time inside of the Big Bend Ranch State Park, and who then cross the Rio Grande River and enter Mexico. The area is all part of the Chihuahuan biosphere which is under UN protections. The burro, who has been a long standing resident of this ecological gem for nearly 500 years, is a living symbol of the Old West. In fact, this era of our history is often used to portray American ruggedness, and Independence.
Species develop within their ecosystems which over time becomes the ecosystem. Clearly all animals have impact, especially humans. That being said, removing or adding a species is like playing with a house of cards. For, the fact is that each "impact" is a PART of the structure. It is how the inter-connection of species works. It is therefore why it is critical to do in depth data collection and studies to conclude how to approach any given land management decision concerning the wild burros of Big Bend Ranch State Park. Interventions to identify conflicts should be addressed by trying to resolve the conflict without removing a species.
Burros have been a part of humankind for over 6000. And, their presence also benefits the locals. Shooting them on site, is not the answer. How can anyone call themselves a conservationist and do something that is so willfully ignorant. More burros would have helped with the recent fires
