It's rather pointless to speculate on what might happen if something outrageous happened.... though if you're reasonably talented, you might be able to get a decent novel out of it.
To the extent that there is any point to the question, it might be instructive to consider the cases of California and (more so) Texas, nominally independent "countries" that were previously annexed (with the consent of the majority of the people living there) by the US. (Texas has a better case for actually being a distinct country at one time than California does; the "Republic of California" was exceedingly temporary and effectively existed in name only.)
