Urban: Government supplies drinking water.Rural: People fetch water from Wells, Ponds, Rivers etc^--FALSE--^A bit of background information never seemed to hurt anyone. The top largest bodies of water surrounding India are the Arabian Sea, the Indian Ocean, and the Bay of Bengal. The major rivers inside the country include: Indus, Jhelum, Ravi, Chenab, Sutlej, Ganga, Yamuna, Tapti, Godavari, Krishna, Kaveri, and Narvada. Water pollution in these bodies of water occur through three main sources: municipal wastewater discharges, industrial wastewater discharges and, return-agriculture flows through drainage structures. Sunita Narain, director of the New Delhi-based Centre for Science and Environment says, 'the river is dead, it just has not been officially cremated.' Three billion liters of assorted waste are pumped into Delhi's Yamuna River each day. (spiegle.de)It is said that 57% of the cities waste is pumped directly into the Yamuna; which makes several parts of the river hardly able to sustain marine life at all. Roughly 80% of all of India's waste ends up in their rivers. The World Bank estimates that 21% of communicable diseases in India are related to unsanitary water. A growing number of bodies of water in India are unfit for human use, and in the Ganges River, holy to the country's 82% Hindu majority, the river dolphin population is falling so rapidly due to pollution that they were downgraded this year from vulnerable to endangered. With the constant flow of pollution into these rivers, how is it that clean drinking water is obtained?

River Ganges is a large and holy river of India. It is holy because its water doesn't get spoiled even if kept in a bottle for years. Though it has also become a victim of pollution now specially in the planes but still in hills its water is pure and clean. It originates from Gangotri in Uttrakhand state and few famous cities on it are - Rishikesh, Haridwar, Varanasi, Allahabad, Kanpur.
Yes, the so-called "HOLY'" Ganges is very dirty because all of the drainage and sewage of all of the cities through which this river passes, goes into this river. People wash their clothes in this and even dead bodies are just floated in this river, which later rot and give off a foul smell. The government has wasted millions of rupees to clean it, but no cleaning will help unless the above is stopped.
it is important that factories stop dumping toxic waste. Also people should not throw rubbish into the river.
Yes, in the Ganges River. You can see more if you type in Ganges into a website which shows videos. Not just a few bodies, but ALOT of bodies due to disease. What is crazy, they also use this river to fish, brush their teeth and to clean up.
