Johnny gets hurt in the outsiders by coming back to the church after going out to Dairy Queen. The church has caught on fire by accident, and some of the children from the picnic was in there, so with out thinking twice, Johnny and Ponyboy went in to get the kids. The kids were yeeted(thrown) out the window. Then, the roof started caving in, so Johnny pushed Ponyboy out and he was too late, and got hit by a flaming log thing.
When Ponyboy and Johnny ran in the the burning church to try to save the children in Windrixville, Pony and Johnny successfully got all the children out, by handing them to dally through a window. Then Ponyboy got out also, Johnny got trapped and Burning timber from the Ceiling fell on him breaking his back and leaving him with 3rd degree burns. Dally raced in to get him but unfortunately, Johnny dies in the Hospital.
Johnny and Ponyboy had been running away so to escape getting in trouble for killing Bob (a Soc). Dally told them about an old abandoned church they could run away and hide in. So they go and hide in it for like five days. Dally finally meets them at the church. By then, Ponyboy and Johnny are sick of eating baloney, the only food they had. Dally can drive, so he takes them to Dairy Queen or something. Anyways, Ponyboy notices smoke coming from the church. Immediately he runs over to find out that the church is on fire and some kids are trapped inside. Him, Johnny, and Dally go in and rescue the kids. Ponyboy is able to make it out in time, escaping any major injuries. Dally is injured but he will recover. Johnny's injuries however were so severe. He was sent to the hospital but still died after a few days to Dally and Ponyboy's dismay.

Johnny was smothering from the smoke and passed out leaving Dally with no choice but to go inside and get Johnny out. Both Dally and Johnny were put in the hospital for saving children out of a burning church.
