At first U.S. Citizens who were members of the People's Temple thought they were going to live in a paradise-but they didn't know they were involved in a cult ruled by Jim Jones. Some witnessed on the news about the abuse of Jonestown-Jim Jones sent his bodyguards to shoot the news reporters after half of the people of Jonestown decided to follow the reporters to fly back to the United States. Jim Jones decieved the people that if they return to the U.S. they would be enslaved and suffered from worse lives/futures. On November 18, 1978 Jim Jones gave his last speech when he ordered 900 people to drink the Kool-Aid mixed with laced cyanide. Many who saw the results of what was happening to the people after they drank the kool-aid either resisted and tried to flee away (only about 6 people were able to flee) Some victims were even shot for resisting.
