He left. ____ I submit that there is more to it than that. :-) Jacob broke away from the pack by accepting his birth right. As the descendant of Ephraim Black, it was he, not Sam Uley, who was meant to lead the wolves of La Push. This did not 'demote' Sam Uley (because Jacob did not then take his place as Alpha); this merely meant Jacob no longer recognized Sam as his superior. In essence, Jacob made himself a 'lone wolf'. In addition to this, he left the pack to go back to the Cullens and warn them of Sam's intention to attack and destroy the aberration growing in Bella's womb (Renesmee). By accepting his birth right, he broke Sam's control over him and invoked the ability to make his own choices and honor his own allegiances. He chose to side with the Cullens (or rather, with Bella).
