In the original 1900 book edition, and the beloved 1939 film version, of 'The Wizard of Oz', the Munchkins started out as small people. They began* as slaves to the Wicked Witch of the East. But they were freed from her cruel rule with her accidental crushing to death by the landing of Dorothy Gale's farmhouse in the Blue Munchkinland of the East. In the book, they began and continued a love for blue. In the movie, they didn't favor blue any more than any other color so long as it was bright. *According to author and Oz series originator Lyman Frank Baum [May 15, 1856-May 6, 1919], the residents of Munchkinland predated the Witch. The Blue Munchkin Country and the other three countries in the beautiful, enchanted, magical land of Oz originally had been ruled by good witches. But the good witches were chased out of Munchkinland and Winkieland. They were succeeded by the slavedriving rule of the Wicked Witches of the East and of the West.
