There were a number of tribes in Alabama until most were forcibly removed in 1830. These tribes included the Alabama tribe, the Cherokee tribe, the Chickasaw tribe, and the Choctaw tribe. We know that the Cherokee men wore leggings and breech-cloths made out of deerskin. They also wore moccasins on their feet. Higher status members of the tribe, such as chiefs, might wear a cloak in public. Men tended to shave their heads and leave one long lock of hair, called a scalp-lock. Warpaint was only used during battle, but some Cherokees did have tattoos on their skin. Women wore long skirts, and blouses that looked like ponchos. Women also wore jewelry, such as necklaces. At some point, after the Cherokee came into contact with the European-style fashion that Americans wore, some members of the Cherokee emulated this style, while others continued to dress in accordance with their traditional culture.
