A hippie.
They were ambused while waking through the jungle.
Jenny died of AIDS. This was back in the early-to-mid 1980s, when there were no real treatments and the doctors couldn't do much more than keep her as comfortable as possible while she died. As she says to Forrest (while they're in the park in Savannah and Forrest Jr. is playing on the swings): "Forrest? I'm sick...I have some kind of virus. And the doctors don't...they don't know what it is, and there isn't anything they can do about it."
While in Vietnam Lt. Dan told Forrest and Bubba to 'keep your heads down and change your socks every time we stop'. In that tropical climate infections can become lethal within hours, so dry feet was important. The rule about keeping heads down is obvious.
Because Forrest saved him from the battle in Vietnam, Lt. Dan lost his legs, which left him depressed and wheelchair bound for a while, until he gets prostatic legs at the end of the movie.

This line is from the animated movie "Forrest Gump," said by the character Forrest Gump while searching for his friend Bubba during the Vietnam War. It showcases Forrest's loyalty and determination in finding his comrade.

When the Vietnam War ended in 1975, North and South Vietnam became one communist nation called Vietnam.
The Reason Forrest Gump Ran"i just felt like running" is the reason Forrest gives, but the real reason is that Jenny left him. To make a long story short, Jenny returned to Forrest's home for a brief period, which Forrest said was the happiest time in his life until that point. Then, one night Forrest asks Jenny to marry him. Her only answer is that "Forrest, you don't want to marry me." He asks her why she doesn't love him. Later that night she enters his bed, tells him that she loves him, and they make love. She leaves the next morning in a cab while Forrest is still asleep. That same day Forrest takes off running, and goes for over three years.
Forrest's jersey number while a member of the University of Alabama football team was 44.
She died of a virus. Probably AIDS, but it wasn't directly stated in the movie.

The character Forrest Gump was a simple man who loved God, country and his momma. He was honest and loyal and despite his limitations led an amazing life and was an inspiration to an entire generation of people. Tom Hanks played Gump to perfection, I can imagine nobody else in that role.
