During the Seven Year's War France lost most of its overseas treasure to Great Britain. The resulting ecomnomic damage almost destroyed the monarchy. However, some of the economic was repaired in the 1760's by the minister, the duc de Choiseul. Because Louis XIV and Louis XV spend way to much money and left a huge state debt. Louis XVI inherited that as he accessed the throne (a debt of 400 million livres!) In 1788 the French government went bankrupt.
Much debt had built up in the French and Indian War and France had also spent money lavishly in support of the American Revolution. However the long term debt had begun during the reign of King Louis XIV.
50% of their income was going towards interest, 6% upkeep of Versailles, not sure of the rest of the percentages but the Seven years war, upkeep of the largest army in Europe, and the royal families luxurious lifestyle were all factors to their debt. They also had the system of the three estates, the first and second estate were the wealthiest people of France (the clergy and the nobility) and the third estate was everyone else in France no matter the economic standing. The third estate (the poorest) was the only estate paying taxes, even thought they had virtually no rights and the least amount of money.
They were bankrupt because France had spend a lot of Why_was_the_french_government_bankrupt_in_1787fighting costly wars but had nothing to show for it and also many people accused the royals especially queen marie-antionette of spending too much money on luxuries and others said the tax system was corrupt and some tax collectors didn't hand all their taxes over to the government

Supposing you mean the French Revolution: the King's failed flight from France to seek refuge with France's enemies caused him and his family to be imprisoned. A little later, the French Revolution radicalized into the period called The Terror. During that period, tens of thousands of people, many of them aristocrats, were killed as 'enemies of the Revolution'; the King and Queen were among them.
