Both regions were conquered and colonized by European countries.

However, most Latin America was colonized by either Spain, Portugal or France while Africa was colonized by Britain, France and Portugal. Most colonies in Latin America revolted and successfully gained their independence during the 19th century while most of Africa didn't decolonize until after the Second World War (1939-1945).

The major difficulty faced by both regions is the lack of complete industrialization, however Latin America is one of the most developed regions in the Third World, while Africa, specially the region south of the Saharan desert, is decidedly the most poor, war-ravaged, least developed region in the world.
