In the Harry Potter universe, a “muggle” is a non-magical person. They are not born with any magical abilities and cannot use magic. Muggles are often unaware of the magical world and its inhabitants, although some may gain knowledge of it through various means. Muggles are often seen as outsiders to the magical world, as many wizards and witches look down on them for not being able to do magic. However, there are several notable muggles in the series who are respected for their intelligence and bravery. These include Hermione Granger’s parents and Harry Potter’s godfather, Sirius Black. Muggles also play a key role in the books, as they are often the ones who are called upon to help the magical characters in their various quests and adventures.

In the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005), when talking about how Lily Potter sacrificed herself for Harry Potter, Lord Voldemort mentioned Lily as "your [Harry's] filthy Muggle mother", even though Lily was not Muggle; she was Muggle-born. This is because most Muggle-haters don't tend to see any difference between Muggles and Muggle-borns, because they think a "Mudblood" is just as filthy as a Muggle, so they call Muggle-borns Muggles.
