"War Horse" was the eighth film directed by Steven Spielberg to be nominated for Best Picture. The seven others: "Jaws" (1975); "Raiders of the Lost Ark" (1981); "E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial" (1982); "The Color Purple" (1985); "Schindler's List" (1993); "Saving Private Ryan" (1998); and "Munich" (2005). Only "Schindler's List" won the top Oscar.

"War Horse" also received five other 2011 Oscar nominations, including Best Original Score (John Williams), Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing.
