However, the VOC (Vereenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie), dutch for the United East Indies Company, took it from the Portugese and created that monopoly. Then, when the VOC faced bankruptcy, the Dutch goverment took over and present-day Indonesia became the Dutch East Indies.
