In 'The Wagtail and the Baby' Thomas Hardy shows us how Nature as a whole is at equilibrium with itself. Animals for the most part do not fear other animals. But all animals fear Man.

One of Hardy's great themes is how the Industrial Revolution was destroying the natural harmonies and rhythms by which people had lived for millennia. (The Industrial Revolution was already well established by the 1880's, but Hardy writes mainly about rural areas where the full impact of factory work and the railways was relatively late to arrive).

'The Wagtail and the Baby' points out how Man destroys natural harmony. What is unusual about the poem (and what makes it a great poem) is that it doesn't say that this is a good thing, or a bad thing. The poem says that this is inevitable - whether we approve or not we need to deal with it.
