British Columbia was the name given to the mainland colony, which existed separately from the colony of Vancouver Island. It had previously been known as Caledonia and had been administered by the Hudson's Bay Company. The original proposal for the name of the mainland colony was Columbia, after the name of the Columbia River. Queen Victoria decided, almost at the last minute, to add the word "British" to the name of the new colony. The USA had been casting covetous eyes on the territory north of the 49th parallel. Her Majesty intended to send a strong signal to the US government that any attempt to steal British territory would not be tolerated. The mainland colony was named British Columbia, and that name was retained when the colony of Vancouver Island was merged with it. The colony of British Columbia entered Confederation on July 20, 1871, and is now the Province of British Columbia.
British Columbia joined confederation because they were promised a rail link between the pacific coast. -------------------------- And given Cash, and had Canada take over their debt, and were given 6 MPs and 3 Senators and promised that joining Canada would boost their economy. But overall it seems to have been a case of loyalty to the Crown. The USA was seen in a negative light after that little revolution and the USA was being very aggressive on the West Coast, taking land seen by most in the area as belonging to Britain or British Columbia. So even though there were many more ties, even families, to the Washington Territory to the south most of the leaders but the movers and shakers had connections and loyalty to Britain. Since Canada was still thought of as part of Britain or had at least not fought and killed British to Confederate they were seen as the nicer choice.

They used to be, but they have not been for many years. In 1867, Canada became a dominion, and in 1982, the last vestiges of British rule were officially ended. Canada is still part of the British Commonwealth, but it is also an entirely independent nation. The name British Columbia refers back to the time when Canada was like a colony of Great Britain. These days, many Canadians think of themselves as first and foremost citizens of Canada; but some (especially older English-speaking Canadians) still recall the historical ties with England and still think of the British monarchy with fondness.
