From what I can tell, the title of geek can be used in one of three ways. First, it can be used as an insult, implying that the person in question in socially inept and fixated on computers or other such topics deemed "nerdy." Alternately, it can be used between friends as a form of good-natured ribbing or taunting. In this way, it isn't meant to embarrass or insult the person, but instead to poke fun at them. The last way, and one of the most recent ways, is when the title of geek is used as a self-imposed badge of pride. When used like this, geek implies that the person in question is of high intelligence and is proud of that fact. People who call themselves geeks frequently feel camaraderie towards each other.
Examples:
1- "You're such a geek. Go play WoW or something.*"
2-"Dude, that's so geeky. Ha ha."
3-"I'm a geek and proud of it. Geeks rule the world."
*I am in no way attempting to insult those who play World of Warcraft or imply that the game is geeky. I'm simply using an example I've heard before in real life.
