It was a plot device written into the plot to intrigue the audience. Just like the briefcase in Ronin.
It was supposed to be diamonds originally but the writers/director thought that too predictable and boring so they decided to let the audience come to their own conclusions on the briefcase's contents.
The elusive content of the briefcase in Pulp Fiction has been the topic of many a discussion. John Travolta said in an interview when asked what was in the briefcase "A bright yellow lightbulb". In terms of story line some have said it to be Marsellus Wallaces soul. In some scenes you see a plaster on the back of his neck and this is said to be where the devil will suck out your soul. But if you see any of Ving Rhames other films, there is a scar on his neck. This question will never be answered by Tarantino, and I dont think I want it answered. I love talking about it and if it ever came to light what was in the case, the discussions would be over!
Almost every movie has some unanswered questions at the end. For example:In Castaway, we never learn what's in the FedEx box.In Pulp Fiction we never learn what is in the briefcase (some say it's Marsellus Wallace's soul). We never learn the true origin of the Joker's facial scars in The Dark Knight. We never learn what Bob whispers to Charlotte at the end of Lost in Translation.
It is Marcellus Wallace's soul.
People think that the plaster on Marsellus' neck relates to the removal of his soul, which is wrong. In the close up shot of the back of Marsellus' head, Ving Rhames has a scar on the back of his neck that Quentin Tarantino thought drew focus, so he covered is with a sticking plaster.
I Did!

It is Marcellus Wallace's soul.
It's where his soul exited his body. His soul is what is in the briefcase.
It's fiction. I mean, what kind of sick soul would give people such a box?
Apparently Quentin Tarantino himself doesn't know; originally it was supposed to be diamonds, but he soon realized that was too mundane. Eventually he just decided to leave it unknown, so each viewer could imagine it for themselves. Some fans have speculated that it is Marcellus Wallace's soul, which he had sold to the devil, and which Sam Jackson and John Travolta had managed to buy back from Lucifer for him. This is just a theory, but it is a pretty cool one.>>This is mostly correct, the soul theory is that Marsellus sold his soul to the devil and became rich enough to buy it back, it was Brett and his companions that reneged on the deal of the return of the soul. Vincent and Jules are brought in to collect the briefcase from Brett and his friends. It seems that the briefcase might be a reference to a 1955 noir movie called Kiss Me Deadly, which featured a trunk filled with radioactive material. Just like in Pulp Fiction, the contents of the trunk glowed mysteriously. However, Quentin Tarantino claims that the correlation is just a coincidence.
The reason that newer fiction depicting vampires looking like humans is because the vampire is a tortured soul and producer want movie-goers to empathize with him or her.
A fiction.
No. The movie Soul Surfer is based on the autobiography with the same name
