Yes. Other units such as miles, kilometers or astronomical units are too tiny to be practical in discussing the distances between the stars, or between the galaxies.

One even larger unit is often used in astronomical measurements, the "parsec". This is the distance of one "parallax second of arc", and is approximately equal to 3.26 light years. For long distances across the galaxy, some astronomers use "kiloparsecs" as a unit of measure, and for intergalactic distances some astronomers use "megaparsecs" or "Mpc".

6,600,000,000 miles.

Light travels at 186,000 miles per second. My calculator says thirty-one and one half million / year. Try calculating it out yourself. 60 sec/min 60 min per hour and go from there.

Light travels at a speed of 186,300 miles per second (299,821 kilometers per second). In the vacuum of space, over 1 year, light is calculated to be able to travel 5.9 trillion miles (9.5 trillion kilometers), thus 1 light year. It takes just over 8 minutes for light to travel from the sun to the earth.

9,460,000,000,000 km (or 9.46 trillion km)

Equation:

60 (secs)x 60(mins) x 24(hours) x 365(days) = 31,536,000

Now, then go

31,536,000 x Speed of light (approx. 300,000 Km/S) = 9,460,800,000,000

In order to travel a distance of one light-year, light must travel a distance of one light-year.

That's a length of length, not a length of time. It's the distance light travels in one year,

through vacuum.

Roughly 9,460,730,500,000 kilometers. (rounded)

Mph is a speed - light travels at a constant speed 186,000 miles per second. There are 3600 seconds seconds in a hour, so it travels 669,600,000 miles per hour. In a year that is about 5,878,499,817 miles.

Light travels at 299,792,458 meters per second, or about 670,616,629 miles per hour.

So in one week, light will travel a little more than 1.8 x 1011 km., or about 112.66 billion miles. (Think of the frequent flier points on that flight!)

To put that in perspective, the average distance from the Earth to the sun is defined as an astronomical unit (AU). In one week, light from the sun will cover 1,212 AU, just reaching the inner edges of the Oort cloud; by way of comparison, Pluto is only about 40 AU from the sun!

Correct. You can calculate that number quite easily. Light travels at about 186,000 miles per second, or 300,000 kilometers per second.

There are 60 seconds in a minute, 60 minutes in an hour, 24 hours in a day, and 365.24 days per year. Just multiply all those numbers together to get the distance of one "light year" in miles or kilometers.

If you mean "how far", the distance is called a "light-year", and is equivalent to about 9.5 x 1012 kilometers or 9.5 x 1015 meters.

How far is 9000 light years?

900 billion years - if you travel near the speed of light. If you travel at any slower speed, it will take longer of course. But do some reading on time dilation - if the traveller travels at a speed very near the speed of light, from his point of view it will take much less time.900 billion years - if you travel near the speed of light. What is use by scientist to measure the distance light travel in one year?

Scientists don't measure the distance light travels in one year. They calculate it by measuring the speed of light. The speed is 300,000,000 meters/sec. and can be measured in the laboratory with a rotating mirror apparatus. To get the distance traveled by light in one year you multiply the speed (above) by the number of seconds in a year. The answer will come out in meters and is also called one light year.
