John Brown was hanged for treason in Virginia in December of 1859. He and his small group of followers were captured by Colonel Robert E. Lee, who led US Marines in the arrest of Brown.
It convinced the South that the Abolitionists favoured violent revolution, and they began to prepare for armed resistance.//// One other aspect of the Raid and particularly its' aftermath I find interesting is this; John Brown was tried, convicted, and executed for TREASON against the STATE of VIRGINIA. Treason against a State, not against the United States(Federal Government). I think that is interesting from a legal(Constitutional)perspective. What say you?!

Anti slavery abolitionist John Brown hoped to start a slave revolt in the South. He and his friends raided and took control of a Federal armory in Harper's Ferry Virginia. There was no revolt and Brown was arrested and tried for treason against the State of Virginia. He was hanged in December 1859.
Harpers Ferry is in West Virginia. It was part of Virginia until the American Civil War and was notable for John Brown's raid - which was an act of treason against the United States but he was only tried for treason in Virginia - and for playing a key role in both of Lee's invasions of the North. When West Virginia was carved from the State of Virginia and accepted into the Union as a separate State during Abraham Lincoln's tenure as President it ceased being part of Virginia.
