They got on to lifeboats, and were then rowed to the Carpathia, which went to America, but 3/4 of the people on board Titanic, mainly men, lost their lives, either by drowning or by frostbite, because the temperature was -2 (celsius), and the water was probably much colder, so they would have frozen to death.
The only way anybody survived Titanic was to get seats on any of the lifeboats leaving the ship.
Many of the 712 survivors were traumatized for life. Some reported having panic attacks at football matches because the roar of the crowds reminded them of the screams from those dying in the water.
Some went on to live long and interesting lives, like Edith Russell (lifeboat 11).
After the sinking, she went on to be the first female war correspondent in the world (for the NY Herald). She traveled, had car accidents, tornadoes, another shipwreck, danced with Mussolini at a dinner party, and bred dogs for Maurice Chevalier.
The more cautious and serious ones got on lifeboats. In the end, when everyone realized the ship was actually sinking, they all ran out and tried to get a spot. Some did, some didn't. The ones who did left the Titanic and survived; the ones who didn't were left to die. They would jump off the ship or run to its other (higher) side, and some of the ones that jumped off the ship swam to a lifeboat and got saved. Some of them were so cold they couldn't help but die, and a few people died of sicknesses and things later, but some of them made it. Luckily, there were people willing to help save a few more lives, which were the ones that took in the ones that jumped off the ship.
Then, they sent out signals into the night sky and there was one boat that came to the rescue. That boat helped all of the people on the lifeboats of the Titanic off those small and squished boats and onto the larger ship. I believe the name started with "C," but I'm not too sure.
